Location

Andon Ryokan is less than 30 minutes walk (or just a couple of minutes subway ride) away from two of Tokyo's most important areas for sightseeing.

Home to the venerable Senso-ji temple, Asakusa is a colorful, historical and fascinating suburb - the very heart of the Tokyo's old downtown known as the ‘Shitamachi’. Hardly a week goes by without some exciting event or festival occurring on its streets, all supported enthusiastically by local people and often attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Highlights include the Sanja Matsuri in May, fireworks in July and Samba festival in August. Whatever the time of the year there is always something interesting going on or to see, including many traditional craft shops.

Close by is the area of Ueno. Much more than the location of a busy train station, Ueno is also where you'll find one of Tokyo's most dynamic and bustling parks. You can enjoy yourself all day here, either watching the many street performers or buying some souvenirs at one of the market stands in the nearby shopping precincts of Ameyoko. If you prefer, you can
paddle in a rowing boat around the large lake and feed the ducks. In addition, there are more museums here than anywhere else in Tokyo, including the excellent Tokyo National Museum. Because of this Ueno is widely recognized as a showcase of Japanese culture.

Taiko-ku, the ward area around Andon Ryokan, still preserves the feeling and atmosphere of an older, pre-economic boom Tokyo, while at the same time offering up all the modern amenities and infrastructure that make it so easy to live in the city. Within short walking distance of the ryokan is a bus terminal, a train station, the terminus of Tokyo's only tram line, not to mention a convenient subway station with a direct line to Ueno, Tsukiji, Ginza and Roppongi. Should you wish to stay in the area there are plenty of good, inexpensive restaurants and snack bars, a big shopping arcade and two large supermarkets.

Andon Ryokan is in a quiet residential area. There are many families here that have lived in the same house, or on the same land, for more than three or four generations. This homely character makes for a very different, comforting atmosphere, when compared with staying in fast moving commercial districts such as Shibuya or Shinjuku.
